Week ending Sunday 01.02.04
This week started with some quite nasty weather. Sunday
Monday Tuesday the NE blew with no let up, sea was rough and uncomfortable,
sky was overcast most of the day with poor visibility. Suddenly Wednesday
dawned clear and calm with a welcome offshore breeze and the NE started
around 10 am, but not strong. Good fishing weather which has continued
up to today, Sunday 1st February.
Monday was Neptune's last day fishing out of Shimoni, but no Marlin
seen. On the Tuesday they fished up to Watamu and tagged a Black Marlin
off Vipingo of approx 120 Kgs. Not catching much out of Watamu Neptune
fished into Ngomeni on the Friday and on the Saturday released a Black
Marlin of 120 Kgs (estimated)
At this time of the year the Sailfish are moving on, but there are always
a few left to keep your attention on the baits. There were only 3 caught
this last week - one on Neptune, one on Tina and one on SnowGoose.
There are a fair amount of Giant Trevally about right now, and Eclare
had a good day on Monday catching seven plus four other different Trevally's
and a Bronze Whaler Shark all tagged and released. Eclare again on the
Wednesday fishing out of Malindi saw a shoal of frigies just off the
Malindi drop off and decided to fish right there. Good decision, as
they released 3 Bronze Whaler Sharks, lost a Black Marlin on hookup,
lost another right by the boat and were just unable to get a tag into
it, and then boated another of 81 kg only because the gills were severally
damaged. On the Saturday Batian took Eclare down to Shimoni, and on
the Sunday they released two Striped Marlin and a Black Marlin. They
also raised 3 more striped Marlin - a good days fishing.
Two notable fish both Barracuda were caught this last week one of 26
kg on Neptune and one of 27 Kg on Tina. These are big Barracuda by any
standards.
These past few weeks have seen a number of Bronze Whaler Sharks being
caught and released. It is indeed reassuring that these fish are still
around and not completely decimated by commercial fishing. The Tiger
shark story is truly amazing. It seems that they are concentrated in
one small area and if one is determined enough they can be caught. These
fish have probably been in this same area for many years, but it is
only a few years ago that skippers became aware that they are there
all the time. So Tina and Snark tried for shark on Sunday, Tina released
one of (est) 250 Kg Peter Hofmann on board. Snark released a monster
of 500 kgs caught by Taco Van Wijk, and on that note I'll end last weeks
report. But a note of warning by killing these tiger sharks it would
be easy to eliminate them completely. If this were to happen Sport Fishing
must hang their head in shame. These fish much all be released.
