Fishing report for the week ending Sunday 8th February
2004
We experienced strong winds, rough seas and poor visibility for the
first 3 days of this week. Thereafter the weather was generally good,
with calm mornings cloudy at first but clearing by midday. A fair to
moderate NE wind starts sometime in the morning and continues into the
night. Full moon was on Friday 6th Feb.
Eclare was in Shimoni for a week and ended up with 3 Striped Marlin
and a Black Marlin & 2 Sail. They also had some big Falusi (Dorado)
strong fish says the fisherman, who also was amazed at the number of
fish they saw, just finning on the surface a sight to be treasured and
never forgotten.
Neptune had a good week fishing out of Ngomeni with a Black Marlin &
a Blacktip Shark on the Monday, a 42.5 Kg Sailfish and a Blacktip Shark
on the Tuesday. Friday they boated a very nice Yellowfin of 85 Kg this
took a live bait for Marlin and Sunday Neptune fished into Watamu releasing
a Black Marlin of 120 Kgs and boating 15 Kingfish, 2 of which were over
20 kgs, 3 Baracudda 1 Wahoo and 4 Tuna a good mixed bag. Tina, SnowGoose
and Snark were fishing out of Malindi, and also had some good days.
They were responsible for releasing 2 Tiger Shark, (one good one of
over 400 Kgs on Snark, SnowGoose had the second of apprx 250 Kg) 3 Blacktip
Sharks, 5 Sailfish and caught a variety of other fish. Most of the fishing
has been straight off Malindi fishing with live Kawakawa or Frigies,
there has been good all round action on these live baits big Kingfish,
Baracudda and Giant Trevally. Peter Darnborough's Alleycat had a nice
Black Marlin. These Black Marlin are all about 100 Kg plus and are being
caught straight out of Malindi. They are obviously about in reasonable
numbers as several boats have reported Marlin strikes. On the day of
writing this the water has cleaned up and a lot of Sailfish have been
seen close 2 miles off Malindi one Watamu boat Castle Lager accounted
for 6 tagged 5.
I have been queried about the Bronze Whaler Sharks reported last week,
that they do not occur here and therefore must be the Blacktip Shark.
The whaler family have 50 odd species and is probably the most difficult
group of sharks to identify. None of us here are qualified to positively
identify these sharks, unlike the Blacktip which is gray and clients
fishing that day identified the fish as a Bronze Whaler, basing their
judgement on having caught several of these fish in Namibia.
Frigate Mackerel are about in large numbers, and as this fish is a wonderful
bait, perhaps the fishing will improve still further next week quite
different. Just as well that we don't know.
