Subject: Greetings from White Elephant

Dear Friends,

A month into the New Year already . . . How time flies. It seems that 3 years were crammed into 2003! This past year was an exceptionally dry year and our Elephants appeared to be more destructive than usual in their constant, desperate search for nutrition. The resulting devastation seemed terrible and senseless. But the drought gave us a new insight into Mother Nature’s fragile balances . . . wherever the Elephants moved, they were followed by herds of Nyala, Kudu and Impala. By pushing down the trees, the Elephants ensured that the out-of- reach branches and nutritious leaves became accessible to the starving antelope – one example of the myriad of miracles in nature.

Lake Jozini provides a wonderful water supply for excellent game viewing opportunities by boat as well as an all year round water source for Pongola Game Reserve animals. During 2003, Lake Jozini became a source of sadness too: As water levels dropped, each day saw the death of many animals trapped in the thick mud whilst trying to get to the water.

But, for every negative, in nature, there is always a positive to balance the scales: the lower water levels exposed the sandbanks, which allowed for superb sightings of Hippo and Crocodile. The sparse bush, too, ensured excellent game viewing and made it easier for the naked eye to spot even the smallest of animals and birds.

The New Year has thankfully brought some good rains and a spectrum of new green hues. The animals have regained condition rapidly and healthy “bushveld babies” abound. Despite the rains we do, however, expect the bush to be less dense this year, which will ensure continued great game viewing opportunities throughout 2004.

White Elephant Safari Lodge has now entered its sixth year of operation, a perfect excuse to celebrate, and we would like to extend a special rate to you, our special guest, for this coming winter season.

For our special Bush Camp guests we are offering a rate of R1300.00 (reduced from R2000.00) per person per night, sharing, at Safari Lodge from 01 March to 31 August 2004 (for a stay of two nights or more). The reduced rate includes Accommodation at Safari Lodge, all meals and two eco activities.

We wish you a very happy 2004 filled with many blessings, magical moments and special adventures.
