Subject: Vals River pollution

Dear Mr. Viljoen,
I am the Water Pollution Control Officer working in the Bothaville area. I presume that the report sent through to Mr. Ntili at Department of Water Affairs and Forestry was written by Mr. Dirk Human working at the Department of Justice in Viljoenskroon. I was the official that met Mr. Human to investigate the fish kill when we by chance came across the municipality trying to unblock a sewage pipe which was causing the overflow of sewage in the Vals River.
The Municipality has been contacted on numerous occasions regarding the problem and steps have been taken to rectify the situation. A report has also been sent to the Municipal manager making him aware of the situation as well as requesting that they provide us with written plans on how they are to deal with such issues in the future.
According to my investigations, the fish kill which occurred upstream of the sewage overflow was due to maintenance being done in the weir. This maintenance involved huge amounts of water to be released from the weir and it is presumed that the fish kill was due to the low levels of water. So far it has been the only incidence of fish kill reported to me in that area.
Further, I have also been in contact with Mr. Andre Hoffman regarding the samples that he had taken. Unfortunately he has not yet been able to provide me with the results and has only telephonically confirmed that the water samples results were fine.
Mr. Ntili has been made aware of the situation and reports have been sent to him regarding the fish kill and the sewage blockage.
If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards

Rashne Sewnarain
